Planting Garlic

Hey everybody!

The end of October is the time to plant garlic! My father-in-law and I visited a Farmers Market in the middle of the summer to purchase some garlic that can grow in the Utah planting zone. Some garlic from the grocery might not grow in the yard due to the different zones. We got to talk to an amazing farmer and he explained to us the taste of each garlic and even explain the proper way to plant garlic! Gold mine!

So in late October, I began to scoped out the perfect location in the garden where garlic would succeed. I have a small garden with surrounding trees so my garden receives little light through-out the day.  I took into the account that next year I would till the whole garden and wanted the garlic to be out of the way for easy tilling. The garden would receive less sunlight in the winter as well  so I picked an area in the middle right.  That area receives about 6 hrs a day.

I love spending time in my garden with my cats meandering around me. So I was excited to spend a Sunday doing just that.

I split each garlic into separate cloves.

Then i dug a hole about 2 inches deep with a 4 inch gap between each garlic.  I created a bed of crushed leaves on the bottom of each hole for nutrition.

After all the leaves, snow, and time, how will I be able to find the garlic? I designed small posts to stick in the ground to mark where each garlic was buried. I used parts of the garlic outer skin and squished them in between tape with a stick. This was simple and quick.  There were a thousand different ideas i came up with but this was the quickest yet so very cute.

After I planted all garlic, I watered each hole and placed leaves all over the area. I am so excited to see how this turns out in the spring!
